how much to tip for room service

Any suggestions on how much to tip for room service in Hilton, Marriot type of hotels? Does it matter if it's lunch or dinner?
Thanks

Many hotels now add in the gratuity and service fees automatically. I either enquire when I call in the guild, or just inquire the person who brings it, "is your tip in hither already?" they are always honest nigh information technology, and I can choose to tip more if I feel so inclined.

Expect at the neb before you sign it to see whether a tip is included. If not, the standard is the aforementioned (regardless of the repast) as it would be if you had the same meal in a eatery.

Questions:

If the tip has been added automatically, how much was it?

Should the tip be the same every bit a waiter in a restaurant (fifteen-xx%) even though a waiter spends much more time and effort to serve you? Or should it reverberate the fourth dimension and effort of the server to wheel up the tray to you?

Virtually all hotels add together the gratuity to the nib for room service, generally 15-eighteen%.
I sometimes add together a couple of bucks more than if the service was particulary good, or the server was specially friendly, but that is certainly not necessary. When yous expect at the pecker, you will see the service charge added in. If you don't encounter it, ask (it likewise generally says right on the room service bill of fare that such a charge will exist added).

Usually the built-in tip is in the fifteen% range. Personally, I remember information technology's splitting hairs to differentiate between the types of service. While the waiter in a eatery may be more involved in your service, the room service waiter has a lot longer trip to your room!

I can't think the last time I've seen room service gratuity at 15%. It is unremarkably 18-22%.

I always throw in a couple of extra dollars considering the waiter has to carve up that gratuity with the hotel. I figure I'chiliad already paying $xx for a club sandwich and then another $two isn't going to broke me.

Last fourth dimension I use room service is at the Swissotel The Drake in NYC. They put 18% (I think, could be 15%) + $3 room service fee on the tab. So, no need to add any additional tip. Just sign the bank check and that's information technology.

You're probably right GoTravel. I haven't ordered room service in a while!

co-ordinate to my hotel mgr friend, the service charge goes to hotel, and waiter/commitment person gets 100% of tip or gratuity charged on bill. She says many people are too embarrassed to ask, and then tip twice. Waiters honey it!

Jed,

Depending on the hotel (and situation) many room service employees finish up doing a lot more than simply pushing a cart to your room. I take worked in hotels where the room service dept. not only had to visit different kitchens to assemble the meals only also prepare portions of them themselves. In that location are also many "in between" steps (water hottles, etc.) that are not normally taken by eating house servers as well.

I'thousand non saying that room service is more difficult than eating place service, simply that, like many jobs, there's more to information technology than many people realize.
